Off-duty Palm Bay firefighter rescues capsized boaters on vacation

Officials say they aren't sure how long the victims had been in the water.

Palm Bay — An off duty firefighter on his way back from a weeklong trip in the Bahamas with his family ended up rescuing a group of people and a dog from a sinking, capsized vessel. It happened in mid-June about 5-miles off shore in an area that was about 7-miles southeast of the Fort Pierce Inlet. Firefighter and Driver/Engineer Cliff Schoonmaker a 30-plus year veteran of the Palm Bay Fire-Rescue Department is also an avid fisherman and sailor. Schoonmaker takes frequent trips to the Bahamas on his 25’ Center Console. On the weekend of June 21st as he was traveling back with his wife, daughter, brother-in-law and a family friend, Schoonmaker’s daughter Chrissy saw what she thought was something odd in the distance. Firefighters donate to Cancer Care Foundation of Brevard

The Palm Bay Professional Firefighters Community Benevolent presented a check to the Cancer Care Foundation of Brevard on Thursday.

Palm Bay — The Palm Bay Professional Firefighters Community Benevolent presented a $2,500 check to the Cancer Care Foundation of Brevard on Thursday. The money came from the proceeds of t-shirt sales during last October’s Breast Cancer Awareness Campaign. The black t-shirts with a symbolic pink fire-rescue logo and lettering were meant not only to raise funds to help cancer patients, but also to raise awareness about the services provided by the Cancer Care Foundation of Brevard. “What you all have done to support our mission is so much appreciated,” said Marta Fiol, secretary of the board for the Cancer Care Foundation. “This money will go a long way and make such a positive impact on the lives of so many people who are suffering with cancer and who are just trying to survive. Firefighters stop garage fire from spreading to home

A house fire in NE Palm Bay was limited to the garage of a home thanks to a quick response from firefighters.

Palm Bay — Firefighters responded to a structure fire on Mascot Street NE shortly before 7:00 p.m. Monday evening. When firefighters arrived on scene they found flames coming out of the garage area of the home. Firefighters performed a quick attack and were able to limit the fire damage to the garage of the home. Firefighters said they don’t know if the residence is occupied. The house if full of belongings, but firefighters described it as looking like a storage unit inside. Continue Reading →

Palm Bay votes to end red light camera program


Palm Bay — Another Brevard County city has voted to terminate red light cameras. The Palm Bay city council voted Thursday night to end the city’s red light camera program. “Cocoa Beach has removed them because they said it was hurting tourism and giving their city a bad image” said Councilwoman Kristine Isnardi. “If we’re the only city in the county that has them, what does it say about us?” Installed in 2008 the cameras were located on Malabar Road at the intersections of Minton Road, Emerson Drive and San Filippo Drive. Palm Bay Road closure delayed by two weeks

Roadside message boards have been in place since March 10th warning motorists of the pending closure.

Palm Bay — Brevard County Public Works has announced there is a two-week delay in plans to close Palm Bay Road. The closure was initially scheduled to begin at 10 p.m. Monday, March 24. The closure of Palm Bay Road between Minton Road and Norfolk Parkway will now take place starting at 10 p.m. April 7. Palm Bay Road will be closed for the replacement of a collapsed stormwater drain at the intersection with Minton Road. The county has said the delay was prompted by a vendor’s inability to provide the required concrete box culverts needed to repair the failed steel pipe. Continue Reading →

Man airlifted after vehicle rollover west of Palm Bay

Palm Bay — An man was airlifted to the hospital following a single vehicle crash Monday evening west of Palm Bay. The crash was reported shortly after 6:00 p.m. on an unpaved stretch of Malabar Road west of Heritage High School. The crash was reportedly a single vehicle crash. The vehicle overturned and came to rest in a canal alongside the roadway. Palm Bay Firefighters called a trauma alert on the sole occupant of the vehicle, an unknown aged male. Continue Reading →

State Attorney says December double homicide was self defense

Palm Bay — A legal review by the State Attorney’s Office concluded a December 2013 shooting that resulted in the deaths of two men was a justified use of deadly force in a case of self-defense. The 3 ½ month long investigation means the shooter identified as 23-year-old Stephen Wright will not face criminal charges for the deaths of 26-year-old Sean Pino, and 21-year-old Dylan Kane. Palm Bay man killed in early morning West Melbourne crash

West Melbourne – A Palm Bay man was killed in an overnight crash early Sunday morning. Police said the fatal crash occurred shortly before 3:00 a.m Sunday morning on Minton Road just South of the I-95 overpass. Police said a car driven by 48-year-old Jonathan Sarakas, of Palm Bay, was traveling southbound on Minton Road when for unknown reasons the vehicle left the roadway. Police said the car then crossed into northbound lanes and flipped, ejecting Sarakas. The Florida Highway Patrol is investigating the crash. Continue Reading →

Heritage High School teacher on leave after student claims to have seen nude photo on phone


Palm Bay — A Heritage High School world history teacher is on paid leave after reports of students seeing a nude picture on his phone surfaced. Damian Wilson is a world history teacher. School officials are investigating a report of a nude picture on the teacher’s phone that may have been inadvertently shown in front of students.
